Teleprompting is the art of delivering a speech to an audience without making it too obvious that the speaker is reading off a script! This is typically executed through one of, or a combination of, three different methods: A presidential teleprompter, downstage monitors and confidence monitors.
Presidential Teleprompter
The presidential teleprompter is the one you’re used to seeing on TV. It consists of two glass panes or mirrors (beam splitters) reflecting monitors that are scrolling a speech which is under the control of the teleprompter technician. Even though the speaker is reading the script off the glass, the placement of the glass gives the impression that the speaker is looking out into the crowd.
Downstage Monitors (DSMs)
Downstage monitors consist of large flat panel TVs mounted on stands, positioned out of the line of sight between the viewing audience and the presenter. DSMs utilize the same scrolling software as and can also be used in conjunction with, a presidential teleprompter.
